The 40 Over 40 Project

Stephanie Colvin,

Age 50

Tell me about yourself and how you feel about being a woman over the age of 40.

It’s taken me many years to be comfortable in the skin I’m in. In my younger years, I concentrated so much on my outer appearance rather than looking at the beauty that was always inside of me. I was constantly comparing myself to others. I was a people pleaser and I put others before myself. But when I entered into my late 40s, I started to realize how worthy I am! Because God said He created my inmost being and knit me together in my mother’s womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made; and my works are wonderful. So the older I get, the more I realize how to love myself more! I have learned to be kinder to myself. I’m learning to forgive myself for my shortcomings and not have unrealistic expectations. I’ve learned to recognize the stigma our society has instilled in us that we should be a certain size, be perfect or flawless at all times. I try to not be anxious if I don’t make every one around me happy all the time. I’ve learned to take care of me and not feel guilty about it and that my beauty comes from within,

When do you feel most confident?

I feel most confident when I can be myself and not worry one minute what anyone else thinks! Love hard, Sing out loud in the car, dance like no one is watching, be present and Live in the moment!

How did your painful times give you the gift of resilience?

I’ve been through a lot of heartache, brokenness and lessons learned. But during each of these tests there has always been a testimony. I’ve realized that I can’t give into fear or worry because God always has a plan.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To not be so hard on yourself because you are worthy and deserving of love. I would tell my younger self to do everything with excellence, even when you don’t feel like it. Because it builds your character and integrity.

What would you tell other mature women about stepping out of their comfort zone and doing a photo shoot?

Oh my gosh… I think every woman that has taken care of everyone else in their lives from their kids, family, spouse, friends and has forgotten to take care of themselves do this! Have an experience that makes you feel beautiful, confident and like the queen you are for a day!
