What should I wear for my family pictures?

It’s one of the biggest questions I get as a photographer. Outfit planning can be stressful for all genres, but family session stress can hit a bit harder. Let’s walk through this together to ease some nerves. Here are some basic tips to get you started:

  1. Stay away from loud, vibrant patterns and prints and logos. These can be super distracting from the subject of the photo - you! Solid colors work best.

  2. Think form fitted. I know loose, flowy fabrics look amazing in person, but when that moment is frozen in time, it can make you look wider than you actually are.

  3. Mix up textures/materials. If some family members have silk or cotton, throw in some sequins or lace. Incorporating various fabrics is a great way to add more interest to your pictures.

Let’s look at some examples!

Option 1: Cream colored top and jeans

This is a step above casual and allows for playing around with various clothing material.

Option 2: White top and jeans

Such a simple way to get a classic, timeless look. Looks great with a white background and edited in black and white.

Option 3: Black top and jeans

Another simple, but sophisticated look.

Option 4: One color + neutrals

You can’t go wrong with a pop of color surrounded by neutrals. Reds, greens, and blues are all fabulous options.

The most important thing…

Relax. This is you and your loved ones. Don’t stress too much about clothing. It’s your family that makes the pictures special and meaningful. Not the clothes.

When booking with me, we will discuss clothing options in more detail and I will give you a guide to help you prepare. I’m also on call before your photo shoot where you are free to text me outfit ideas at any time and I can help you move in the right direction. That’s one of the many perks of having a full service photography experience.
