The 40 Over 40 Project

Angie Collins,

Age 51

Tell me about yourself and how you feel about being a woman over the age of 40.

I am a wife, I've been married to my awesome husband for 13 years. We married on the beach in Jamaica when I was 38 years old. By todays standards, I was practically an old maid. I actually think I was ready for my happily ever after and I finally had found it. I'm a step mother of two amazing sons. I am a daughter, a sister, an aunt, cousin and friend. I turned 52 a few weeks ago and I am quite comfortable with that. I am learning to not be so hard on myself about the changes that occur to your body with age. I think age is just a number and I don't let it define me. I try to always look towards the future and what's next. I come from a long line of strong-willed, independent women, from my grandmothers, my mom, my aunts and my cousins. I was encouraged to have confidence, to be a go-getter and to not be afraid to stand up for myself. I think a strong woman is very aware of herself and of others around her. She knows who she is and what she wants.

When do you feel most confident?

I feel most confident when I achieve something I set out to do. Setting goals for myself and then accomplishing them, makes me feel like I can conquer whatever life throws my way.

How did your painful times give you the gift of resilience?

I would say my weight was always my biggest struggle throughout my younger years. I have worked hard to gain control of my weight and ultimately my overall health. Making better food choices, drinking lots of water and exercising have been a constant struggle for me. I am learning to embrace healthier habits so that I may enjoy life to the fullest.

What advice would you give your younger self?

My advice to my younger self would be to learn to relax and don't always be so serious. Savor every moment and don't be scared of failure. Follow your heart and dream big! Never change for anyone, always be who you are. You are enough!

What would you tell other mature women about stepping out of their comfort zone and doing a photo shoot?

You will have a blast. This was such a fun thing to do for yourself. Don't put it off, schedule your appointment and go have fun!
